Show & Tell Friday

It's time for show and tell Friday!

Kelli over at There is no place like home hosts it. Click on the above picture to find out more :)

This week I decided to share a childhood favorite. I have a lot of the books that my mom used to read to me as a child and I keep them on my bookshelves with all the other books that I've read over the years. They're a little tattered, but that's because they were read over and over. Perhaps even a little abused, but I think that's normal for most childhood books. Let's see if you recognize which book was my favorite...

"I am Sam
Sam I am"

"That Sam I am!
That Sam I am!
I do not like
that Sam I am!"

"Do you like
green eggs and ham?"
"I do not like them,
Sam-I-am.
I do not like
green eggs and ham."

And so goes the story of little Sam-I-am trying to get this grumpy character to eat some Green Eggs and Ham. I still have the book, but somewhere down the line I lost the cover.Ooooo...this is my favorite part...

"Would you eat them
in a box?
Would you eat them
with a fox?"
He gets really angry at this point!

"Not in a box.
Not with a fox.
Not in a house.
Not with a mouse.
I would not eat them here or there.
I would not eat them anywhere.
I would not eat green eggs and ham.
I do not like them Sam-I-am."The chase goes on and on until finally...

"You do not like them
So you say.
Try them! Try them!
And you may.
Try them and you may, I say.".... after a long battle and falling off a boat into the water, the grumpy character gives up and takes a bite.

"Say!
I like green eggs and ham!
I do! I like them, Sam-I-am!
And I would eat them in a boat.
And I would eat them with a goat..."
"I do so like
green eggs and ham!
Thank you!
Thank you,
Sam-I-am!"All he had to do was take a bite and he would have avoided all of the arguing, but then we all wouldn't have had as much fun, now would we? ;)

Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham has always been my favorite book and I can almost recite the whole thing without looking at the words. I gave a copy to each of my children when they were born and anytime someone has a baby, it's always my first gift to them. In fact, when I found out my brother Kent and his wife Jessica were going to have a baby, the first thing I did after hearing the news, was hop online and order a copy for my future nephew.

I don't exactly know why I loved this book so much as a child. I think it must be the humor of the chase that Sam-I-am goes through to get this character to eat something. Now that I'm older, I can see what Dr. Seuss was getting at. He just wanted kids to try a bite of something new before they decided they didn't like it. As parents we can all understand this and I think it's a better way of trying to get your kids to eat something, rather than telling them that there are starving children in Africa. How many mom's have said that to their kids? And how many kids have thought to themselves (or said out loud) "Well, then send it to them!" Dr. Seuss took something that every parent goes through and made it fun.

I find humor in the fact that these days it's Annie that has turned into Sam-I-am. She loves to experiment in the kitchen and tries to get Rich to try her creations. They play a toned down version of Green Eggs and Ham as she persuades him to eat it. It's actually very amusing and I didn't realize the similarities until I pulled out this book to share it with you.

Theodor (Ted) Seuss Geisel, otherwise known as Dr. Seuss, was born on March 2, 1904 and wrote over 40 children's books. All of them were wonderful, but Green Eggs and Ham will always be my favorite. He left us on September 24th 1991, but the magic of his writing will live forever in the hearts of children all over the world.

Especially in mine....

Have a wonderful Friday!

hugs,
rue :)

Yes, I read this book to my children...With my little boy (that is NOW 44...booooo hooooo)it was LITTLE BLACK SAMBO...he loved that book so much that, after reading it to him a kizillion times, he "read" it right along with me, word for word, at 3 years old. My daughter just loved them all and still, to this day, loves reading. Me, too!

My son happened to be in the room when reading your post...he loves Dr. Suess! We just returned from the library yesterday with several of his books in hand. We do have Green Eggs and Ham, it one of my son's favorite.

What a great idea to give that as a present for the new babies! Reading, it's the gift that keeps on giving!
Thanks for visiting my blog! Come back again!

Hi Rue!

Would you could you in a house?
Would you could you with a mouse?

Gotta love Dr. Seuss! We have lots of Dr. Seuss books, including a couple that were originally mine. Two of my very favorites (although I don't actually remember it from my own childhood) is the story of the Sneetches and What Was I Scared Of? I don't think I got any of the "life lessons" in the books until I was an adult, but I really appreciate them now.

Look at what a cutie you were! Thanks for sharing another sweet memory!

Hi Rue!!

I love your books from when you were a little girl. My mom recently gave mine to me that she had been saving. My kids LOVE "Green Eggs and Ham" On Dr. Seuss's birthday, their school had a big celebration in honor of the day and served green aggs and ham at lunch. My middle son dislikes eggs a lot, however, he ate the green eggs at school and loved them - LOL!!

Happy belated birthday to Alex!! I hope he had a wonderful day! Time does fly by so fast doesn't it? Have a happy Friday!

Hugs,
Erin

Who is better than Dr. Seuss!
I have all my favorite books and began a collection of children's books when I began working in schools. Dan and Grace have their favorites as I do mine. Recently I donated much of my collection to a group that gets books into the hands of homeless children. What better to do with them?

I love to see our kids loving the very books we did in childhood. That makes the books even sweeter!

Love,
Sue

Rue, your daughter is so sweet! I had a special day with my grown up daughter yesterday, which I just blogged about :-)

My kids loved Seuss books too! The very first book they both learned to read was "Hop On Pop"!

I love books of all sort, and I have many save from my childhood, too. They really are special keepsakes.

Thanks for a great post!

Hugs, Pat

We love Dr. Suess too. I blogged about reading Dr. Suess with my littlest child sometime this past winter. My own favorite Dr. Suess book is "My Many Colored Days" but unfortunately I don't own it (just get it from the library occassionally.) Like you, I've read some of these books so often that I have them memorized, which makes my 8 year old son laugh. I guess he thinks I'm silly. *grin*

What a cutie you were, with your bright smile and your favorite book in hand! Great photo and wonderful post. :)

Just the other day my 14 year old daughter was telling me how she remembers and misses reading the Dr. Suess books. I used to love reading them to her. I kept them for future grandbabies. Have a great weekend.

Rue,
You're going to be shocked, but I don't think I've ever read that book. I have heard parts of it, but never the whole thing. I must be the last person on Earth... Maybe I'll ask my husband to pick one up for me.
I loved the way you said, "If they would've just tried it..." So funny! I love to come by here it lifts my spirit with your writing and of course, music - yes, even more after - ahum (clearing throat...) exercising! Remember that word, I know you do a lot! Oh yes, and darling picture.
Happy Weekend, Rue!

I think Dr. Suess just knew how to write a book that would not only captivate the youngest readers but keep that book alive for a lifetime. I think we have all loved reading Dr. Suess as children and to our own children. They are easy to read and the rhyming makes them so fun. Not to mention the pictures were so funny.
My little brother loved Go DOG Go and we would read it over and over and over to him I think I have that one memorized.

Ahhhh... another precious story from you ~smile~ And... what an adorable picture of you, too!

Like so many others, I, too, have some special memories of those books being read to me, along with many others. Reading outloud to a child is one of the best gifts an adult can give!

Have a lovely day, Rue!

Thanks for sharing the Dr. Seuss books.
