Syria: Damascus back to the negotiating table?

The first round of direct negotiations in search of a solution to the war in Syria ended without major breakthroughs, as expected, and yet no one knows whether the regime's delegation returns to the negotiating table, which should be resumed on 10 February.

Lakhdar Brahimi acknowledged that "the advances are, in fact, very slow. The gap between the parties continues to be enormous and don't bother to hide it. " However, the mediator claims to have observed "some common ground."

Brahimi said that the parties broached the idea of a ceasefire in Syria to allow the passage of humanitarian aid. The opposition has agreed to return to the negotiating table, the delegation of the regime must consult Damascus before giving an answer.

While the negotiations have advanced at a snail's pace, about 1900 people were killed in Syria, according to an NGO

Obama reparte in strength and firmly

It was a willful and combative President who addressed the Congress to make the annual State of the nation speech. The entire House of representatives and a third of the Senate will be renewed next month of November. Barack Obama gave an angle of attack on the Democrats: reduce inequalities.

"America does not stop â€" and neither do I. So, where and when I can take steps without legislation to offer more opportunities to more American families, that's what I'm going to do. "

With an unemployment rate of 6.7%, and a growth of 4.1%, the minimum wage is about 7, 25 dollars/hour and Obama wants all federal employees earn at least $ 10.10, or even an increase of 40% for some public officials.

"In the coming weeks, I will issue an order to require federal contractors to pay federally funded employees a fair wage of at least $ 10.10 (just over 7 euros) per hour â€" because if someone cooks for the soldiers or wash your dishes, you can't live in poverty."

In foreign policy, the President wants to honor the promises forgotten, such as the closure of Guantanamo Bay:

"With the end of the war in Afghanistan, this must be the year that Congress ends with the restrictions on transfer of prisoners and the closure of the prison at Guantanamo Bay. We fought against the terroirsmo not only with the intelligence services and the military action, but because these are the ideas enshrined in our Constitution. "

Obama has shown itself determined on warning to Congress, threatening with the presidential veto any attempt to prevent the development of negotiations with Tehran.

In Russia, as in the rest of the world, the annual speech of the American President on the State of the Union, on Monday night, was followed by many people. Barack Obama spoke of the internal conflict that is affecting Ukraine, spoke about Iran and the crisis in Syria.

Prudent regarding Syria and Ukraine: does not accept an opposition that does not deny the terrorist playbook and argues that the Ukrainian people has the right to freedom of expression.

Navalny denounces "Olympic corruption" in Sochi

The data published on the internet (sochi.fbk.info/en) indicate that the winter games have already cost close to 50 billion dollars (about 36.5 billion), five times more than Vancouver four years ago.

According to Putin, the arrangements cost about 6.5 billion dollars.

Alexei Navalny says that "from the beginning, the Sochi project has been designed not only to carry out the Olympic Games but also to enrich a small number of bosom buddies of Putin".

The man who led the protests against the master of the Kremlin (2011-2012) estimates that corruption represents more than 30% of the costs, but does not provide solid evidence of how the money has been diverted.

On the streets, the population says that "it is very possible" that there has been corruption because in Russia "is like this: everyone wants to receive its share in all" what is done.

Navalny presents several examples of conflicts of interest and argues that Russia spent double what was needed and that is very bad in the photo while producing the most expensive Olympics in history.

Ukraine: life on Maidan Square on the fringes of protests

Every day, she goes to the supermarket and buy some food and other basic necessities to people who practically two months are living in Independence Square in Kiev, the already famous Maidan Square.

On the street, are improvised open-air cantinas where the food taken by Anna are prepared and served for free to Protestants. She's on their side. Not actively, but supports them.

"I cannot stand idly by. Also I live in Kiev, "takes on Anna, explaining how to intervene indirectly in the pro-European protests:" I see on the internet what Protestants need. Sometimes it's coffee or tea, others are medications. They live here and they need support. "

Life on Maidan square isn't easy. It's winter, temperatures are negative. Even in the daytime. Protestants still standing for the duration of the square. Many are there for two months and there's been, for example, Christmas. They need support. Anna feels compelled to help.

But not everyone, including residents in Kiev, is happy with the protests. Between Ukrainians who live in the surrounding area of Maidan Square there are dissenting voices.

Viktor, for example, criticizes "the constant noise and smoke". "It's impossible to live here. I'm against chaos. If you want to keep the protest, please, be my guest. But do not disrupt the lives of other people, "complains.

Another resident in the area, who did not want to identify, sees things differently than Viktor. "It's okay! People are fighting for their rights and this is right. Me don't bother me none, "argues this other.

The sound of beats, which seem more like hammer blows, is frequent. The truth is that the whole area, especially the Hrushevskoho Street, is far from what it was, for example, a year ago. The fires, the destruction, the wreckage, it transfigured the zone. It's going to take a lot for life back to normal in Maidan Square.

Four Grammys for a Luso

Homem-Christo was born in Paris, February 8, 1974. Great-grandson of Francisco-Manuel de Homem-Christo Son, a Portuguese writer with international projection, described by many historians as the "first authentic and undisputed Portuguese fascist", as referred to by Rolling Stone magazine, Music, and a close friend of Benito Mussolini.

The figure of Man Christ is still recognized by the great reputation, mainly by the inhabitants of Aveiro. The value and prominence of the work of the noted journalist, founder of the weekly "the people of Aveiro", earned him among other honors the patron of Aveiro city high school. In addition to the school, there is a street called Christ Man, a family name that seems destined to be marked in memory of the Portuguese.

Former French Ambassador in Ukraine: "Europe won't impose anything"

A protester explains: "Today, it's not about choosing a policy or a particular party, but only express the values that the people chose. There is no political banners here, there are many Ukrainian and European flags flags. "

In just over two months, the arm wrestling between the protesters and the regime, became very violent. The protest was echoed in all cities and towns, including in regions of Russian influence in the East, as in Dnipropetrovsk, one of the bastions of Ianukovich.

The scenes of urban guerrilla warfare are now frequent and caused already dead. One of the most shocking images of public humiliation was a naked protester by police and required to keep quiet with a temperature of-10° while the agents beat him repeatedly.

Before drifting, European Council President Herman van Rompuy was quite clear during a visit to Warsaw, Poland, last week: keeps offering to agree assiociação with Kiev, but condemns the violênca.

The EU calls on the Ukrainian Government to fulfill the promises made and continue to negotiate with the opposition early presidential elections.

Jean-Paul Véziant, who was Ambassador of France in Ukraine, between 2005 to 2008, gives us his vision of the crisis.

Jean-Paul Véziant â€" question how we got here since last November 21. There are those who talk of civil war. If a portion of the population manifests itself, there is another part that doesn't manifest itself, a part of Ukraine. And this silent Ukraine no apova what's going on in Maidan. But we can't say that is at war with another part of the Ukraine. In the heart of Europe, in 2013, these political violence, these sequetros, these brutalities, this humiliation of demonstrators, attacks on journalists ... I cannot understand. It's hard to bear, because this sort of thing was part of the past. Even in the most high voltages of December 2004, there were no dead, there was no desire for dialogue. The protesters, with a peaceful determination, forced the dialogue and changed the course of events. Will be possible to have into account that spirit of the 2004 Orange Revolution? I wonder if I can still make it? I don't know.

euronews â€" when he was Ambassador of France in Ukraine, took part in the cultural and economic rapprochement of the two countries. This approximation has a future?

Jean-Paul Véziant â€" Yes, this approach has a future. Even if some people think that if you did all this time is lost, it is not true. The investment resulted in a mutual understanding, a mutual respect that will not be erased overnight. A vast majority of Ukrainians believe in the development of these relations. You know very well that Europe does not propose a new strategic space or NATO membership, but at another level, cooperation of encouragement to industrial development. I believe that there are mutual benefits to Ukraine and Europe and also believe that the seeds of prosperity is thrown.

euronews â€" what you can do Europe for stability and calm be restored in Ukraine?

Jean-Paul Véziant-To the European Union, is to Ukrainians that fits to choose freely and democratically, without outside pressure and continuity, i.e. when there is a commitment to follow the path chosen. Remember, in this regard, that the propositions of the signing of an association agreement made by Brussels are still on the table. You can do Europe? I said: may not impose anything, and wishes it to be, the Ukrainians to choose. But, to this end, it is necessary to restore confidence, clearly broken. You may have to a third party appears as the guarantor of sincerity, that we need to restore confidence between the different political forces of Ukraine. I think, honestly, that diplomacy has features, which can make proposals, can perform much better than I ever will the police repressions, but for that it takes political will. In addition it is necessary to go quickly, before the situation gets control of ones and others. This is my vote for your country, for Ukraine. And I wish you good luck.
