Five firefighters dead in two months

The fires in Portugal made another mortal victim. A firefighter for 21 years died in fighting a fire at San Marco/Muna, in the municipality of Tondela and four others were injured.

This is the fifth victim mortal in a space of two months.

The firefighter in question belonged to the Corporation of Carregal do Sal.

Residents complain that this is the worst situation ever seen in the last eighty years.

A total of 1,470 firefighters and others supported by operational 417 vehicles fought this morning the nine major fires that started in the country.

The fire of Tondela, Viseu, continues to mobilize the largest number of means of combat.

The Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho considers to be difficult to answer so many fires simultaneously since "much of this situation is due to the criminal hand".

The France will send another plane to Portugal to help in fighting the fire in the Serra do Caramulo, while Spain has accepted the request to send three more canadair planes.
