Syria exposes deep divisions at the G20

Military intervention in Syria, yes or no? This is the question that dominated the G20 Summit that began Thursday in St. Petersburg, in Russia.

Summit dedicated to world economic recovery, the answer to attacks with chemical weapons in Syria dominated the discussions.

Over dinner, the leaders discussed the situation in the country revealing deep differences between the main actors.

So far, Washington has only the support of the French President, François Hollande.

Russia, China and even the European Union voiced opposition to armed intervention favoring a political solution.

In a meeting with the press, the Russian Chief of staff responded to American accusations.

"After hearing the head of the Pentagon say that Russia supplied chemical weapons to Syria and then correcting herself by saying that there were chemical weapons but only the means for their production. I'm sorry if you lose your composure, but this isn't true, completely untrue, "said Sergei Ivanov.

The Summit in Russia coincided with a meeting of European defence ministers in Vilnius, Lithuania. The goal is to find a common position regarding Syria.

The head of European diplomacy Catherine Ashton, said that no one denies the occurrence of an attack with chemical weapons. The differences between the countries reside in the authorship of the attack.
