Baku is preparing to enter the history of European sport

An initiative sponsored by the International Olympic Committee, which will take place every four years and reserved for sportsmen of the old continent, but that is far from being a novelty in the international sports scene. Quite the contrary.

For more than six decades that the continental competitions are held regularly. The Asian Games and the Pan American began in the same year, 1951, in 1963 began the Pacific Games and two years after the Pan-African Games. Europe was missing.

A fault rectified the 8 December last year, with the creation of the European Games at the 41st General Assembly of European Olympic Committees in Rome.

For 20 different modes already have guaranteed place at the inaugural, in the capital of Azerbaijan, and there is still the possibility of Athletics in the programme.

Work in 21 sports venues have elapsed apace, some are even completed. The Olympic Stadium, investment exceeding 450 million euros, with a capacity of 68 thousand spectators, has scheduled for February 28, 2015 completion date.

The investment is not limited to sports venues. Includes the renewal of public transport systems in the city and the construction of a new airport terminal, which will allow the Baku receive up to five million visitors per year.

For the European Games, the organization expects to receive between six and seven thousand sportsmen, on behalf of 49 European countries belonging to the Olympic family.

As the sports venues, the accommodation for the athletes were built to think about the future and will be reused after the conclusion of the games.

The inaugural edition of the European Games will take place between May 12 and June 28. In 2015, Baku will be the European capital of sport.
