Croats reject gay marriage

The overwhelming majority of those who voted had answered "Yes" to the referendum question: "do you agree that marriage is the marriage between a man and a woman?

Ivo Josipovic, Croatian President says he hopes that the results of the referendum are not reason for deep ideological divisions in the new country.

The query caused a violent debate between human rights groups and the center-left Government, on the one hand, and the Conservatives backed by the Church, on the other.

The Government qualified as homophobic conducting the consultation, convened after a Catholic Association get 740 thousand signatures.

Zagreb Resident Sandra Markic:

"I think the initiative, which has provoked so much anger, arguments, bad words and accusations cannot be good. That's what I think. Regardless of whether it is for or against the initiative, something like this can't be good for the tolerance

Resident in Zagreb says: "winners referendum expected tradition va standards customary, prevail, the Church and religion to prevail"
