South Africa: Marikana miners continue strike

The unions have rejected the proposed wage increase of nine per cent, made by the consortium of Anglo American Platinum and Lonmin, which operates the mine.

The miners ' protest, which lasted for a week, is strongly affect the supply of Platinum to the world automotive industry, which uses this ore in the manufacture of catalysts.

The conflict is more a source of concern for South Africa's President, Jacob Zuma, who faces within three months a new election.
