Syria: Damascus back to the negotiating table?

The first round of direct negotiations in search of a solution to the war in Syria ended without major breakthroughs, as expected, and yet no one knows whether the regime's delegation returns to the negotiating table, which should be resumed on 10 February.

Supporters of the opposition and the regime of Bashar al-Assad focused in front of the UN headquarters in Geneva. Inside, the delegations speak through the UN mediator and the impasse continues. The opposition wants a transitional Government without Assad Damascus claims that "it is out of the question".

Lakhdar Brahimi acknowledged that "the advances are, in fact, very slow. The gap between the parties continues to be enormous and don't bother to hide it. " However, the mediator claims to have observed "some common ground."

Brahimi said that the parties broached the idea of a ceasefire in Syria to allow the passage of humanitarian aid. The opposition has agreed to return to the negotiating table, the delegation of the regime must consult Damascus before giving an answer.

While the negotiations have advanced at a snail's pace, about 1900 people were killed in Syria, according to an NGO

According to the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW) the pace of removing the Syrian arsenal has to increase. So far, the chemical weapons who left Syria represent less than 5% of arsenal accounted for.
