Romania: human trafficking network Dismantled

During the operation at least three men and two boys between 10 and 12 years were released from captivity.

The gang have abducted and enslaved at least 40 people since 2008. The victims were mostly minors or men with problems or mental disabilities or from very poor families.

After the kidnapping victims were whipped, forced to beg, to perform hard labor or forced to participate in fights. It is suspected that some of the victims have suffered sexual abuse.

The police detained 29 people and, according to prosecutors, about 90 people are being investigated for alleged involvement.

During the search, apreendera authorities, more than 50000 euros in cash, three vehicles and nine chainsaws.
