Italy: Prime Minister resigned

The direction of the Democratic Party, the main coalition party in power, supported yesterday by a large majority the proposal from party leader, Matteo Renzi, of "a new phase with a new Government".

Renzi, elected to the party leadership in December, defended the "necessary and urgent" formation of a new Government "," motion that, after several hours of discussions, was adopted by 136 votes in favour, 16 against and two abstentions.

Matteo Renzi thanked Letta the "remarkable work" which was held last year in front of the Government, but considered "necessary and urgent to open a new phase, with a new Executive supported by current majority", formed in the Democratic Alliance with the centre-right.

Enrico Letta was chosen in April 2013 by the President, Giorgio Napolitano, to form a coalition Government with the centre-right that put an end to the impasse created by the enormous fragmentation of votes in the parliamentary elections of February.

Matteo Renzi, Mayor of Florence, was elected leader of the Democratic Party on 8 December, with a significant 68% win, after a campaign marked by criticism of Letta.
