Donetsk celebrates outcome of the referendum

In Donetsk was the result of a referendum, not recognized by the Ukrainian authorities. 89% of the voters were in favour of self-government.

The region declared independence in relation to Ukraine, and urged Moscow to consider their integration:

"According to the will of the people's Republic of Donetsk and to restore historical justice, we call upon the Russian Federation to consider the merger of the people's Republic of Donetsk with the Russian Federation," said Denis Pushilin, one of the leaders of the separatists.

The question posed in the referendum, this Sunday, focused on the will of "self-government", in the region, but made no reference to a possible accession to the Russian Federation.
