The European Council wants new priorities for the EU

European leaders want to refocus the Union and closer to its citizens. This was the main conclusion of the dinner of Heads of State and Government of the 28 held this Tuesday in Brussels. An extraordinary meeting, marked after the elections this Sunday. This prioritization has become even more urgent after the significant results of the anti-euro brigades parties in countries like France and England.

The President of the European Council, Hernan Van Rompuy, at the final press conference, explained that "as the European Union is coming out of a financial crisis, needs a positive agenda and future-oriented, based on growth, competitiveness and employment. We need an economic and Monetary Union to work better and more developed and at the same time preserve the unity of the Union ".

The dinner ended without any name advanced to the Presidency of the European Commission. The President of the Council will now conduct the negotiations with the European Parliament to the choice of Barroso's successor. At the end of the meeting, the Portuguese Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho has ensured that there is still no names chosen, but supports Jean-Claude Juncker, the candidate for the post presented the votes by the European people's Party (EPP, which integrates the PSD and the CDS/PP), winner of the European elections.
