Merkel welcomes new Ukrainian leader in Berlin between G7 and d-day

The German Chancellor welcomed, this Thursday in Berlin, the new Ukrainian President-elect Petró Poroshenko, hours after being the G7 leader more averse to adoption of new sanctions against Russia.

The meeting, in the form of an informal dinner and two days from the inauguration of the new President, will focus not only on the current situation on the ground but also on the possible resumption of discussions between Moscow and Russia, as well as on international aid to fragile Ukrainian economy.

Poroshenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin should attend together, this Friday at the d-day ceremonies in Normandy, although not yet confirmed the possibility (suggested by the French President, François Hollande) of a first meeting between th e two leaders, on the sidelines of the event.
