Sissi launches "new Suez canal"

The goal is to increase to about double the capacity of the maritime traffic, in the crucial artery linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.

The new channel will be parallel to the existing one â€" opened in 1869 and 193 kilometres in length â€" extending and deepening the artificial water course over a distance of approximately 72 kilometres.

The project has an estimated cost of close to three billion euros and according to Sissi, will be financed by "17 Egyptian private companies" under the supervision "of the army".

In 2013, over 16,500 Suez Canal vessels, yielding close to four billion for Egypt.
