5 years in prison for Oscar Pistórius

Oscar Pistorius was sentenced to 5 years in prison for the death of his girlfriend, the model Reeva Steenkamp.

The sentence was read, this Tuesday, Thokozile Masipa by judge, at a hearing open to the public. The magistrate insisted on the balance between sending a message to the South African society and rehabilitate the accused, to become, again, a useful member of society.

Oscar Pistorius was facing a sentence that could go on probation â€" which would free-up to a maximum of 15 years in prison.

The Prosecutor requested a minimum of 10 in prison, while the Defense asked for a sentence of house arrest and community service.

During the past week, prosecution and defense argued why the penalties applied for.

The prosecution said the negligent character of the athlete's action, which caused the death to the model, and insisted that it is necessary to send a message to South African society.

The defense, for its part, pointed out that the sport had no intention of killing and stressed the fact that the prisons in the country were not prepared for disabled prisoners, as in the case of Oscar Pistorius.

Pistorius was convicted for manslaughter, the end of a process very publicized, which began on March 3. The facts date back to February 14 last year, when the amputee Olympic athlete killed his girlfriend with four shots, fired through the closed door of the bathroom, thinking it was a thief.

How the trial of Oscar Pistorius has changed his opinion about the South African legal system?
