Nigeria: fighting between army and militias of the Boko Haram

An air and land operation is ongoing against the jihadists in the capital of Borno State, the cradle of the movement formed in 2002 and since then sowed terror among the population in the northeast of the country.

On 3 January the Islamist militias massacred hundreds of people in the town of Berry, in the far northern state of Borno which gave them a strategic advantage to attack Maiduguri.
