United Kingdom: more than 260 public figures suspected of sexual abuse against minors

The police said he had received complaints of sexual abuse of minors against 261 public figures, since the scandal Jimmy Savile, a BBC presenter, now deceased, indicted for paedophilia.

"This indicates that victims feel safer to report abuses. You can be sure that now we act very differently than happened years ago, "said Simon Bailey, responsible for protection of minors.

Savile, who died in 2011 with 84 years, is suspected of having abused children during more than fifty years, often in institutions such as schools and hospitals, where he worked as a volunteer.

"The suspects now reported are just the tip of the iceberg. We are working with hundreds of people who haven't made complaints, giving them support to do so, "said Graham Wilmer, a victim of abuse and Advisor.

The presenter Rolf Harris and the publicist Max Clifford are two of the public figures caught in the meshes of Justice.

The British Government announced last year the opening of an independent inquiry to examine how institutions and public bodies treated children in recent decades.
