Immigration: 50 bodies found in boat that tried to reach Europe

Fifty lifeless bodies were found aboard a boat carrying more than four hundred immigrants off the coast of Libya.

The discovery was made by the crew of the Swedish ship Poseidon, which integrates the European operation Triton and who watched the vessel in trouble in the Mediterranean.

The victims may have died asphyxiated in the basement due to gas fumes in the ship's engine.

Giovanna Di Benedetto, a spokesman for the NGO Save The Children, says that "according to the first testimony from minors Egyptians on board, traveling all in the basement, with mothers and children, and had to pay to get out and get some air, even if only for a few minutes".

This is not the first time that bodies of immigrants are suffocated or died of exhaustion on Board of boats trying to reach European shores.

This Wednesday was marked by a new wave of attempts to cross the Mediterranean. Only yesterday morning, were rescued more than 1900 shipwrecked in various operations in the channel of Sicily.
