Macedonia: Detained nine people suspected of links to Islamic extremism

The operation, expected since last September took place overnight in the towns of Skopje, Tetovo, Gostivar, Kumanovo and Struga.

Macedonian laws entails a penalty of up to five years in prison for participation in foreign wars.

The Ministry of Justice reported that there was a connection between those arrested and 16 people of Macedonian origin who were killed in Syria in recent months, fighting in extremist groups.

Government sources estimate that about 130 citizens Macedonians took part in the war in Syria and in Iraq, and some of them are still on the battlefield.
