Faithful Muslims begin annual pilgrimage to Mecca

The Saudi authorities have mobilised more than 100 thousand policemen to ensure security of the ritual, one of the five pillars of the Muslim religion.

After they arrived in Mina, the pilgrims will ascend Mount Arafat today, where according to tradition, the Prophet Mohammed would have pronounced his last speech.

The ritual continues until Sunday, with the feast of the sacrifice of the Lamb, in the fifth, the stoning of the devil and the seven laps the "Kaaba", at the Grand Mosque of Mecca.

The Saudi Government has banned any manfiestação politics during the ritual, when fears protests by the country's military intervention in Yemen.
