Austria: postal votes will decide election result

"All I can say is that those who leave winner will have to join to Austria again"

In Austria official figures suggest that the extreme right-wing candidate, Norbert Hofer, has the upper hand in the race for the Presidency.

Official results announced by the Interior Ministry suggested that Hofer has 3.8% more votes than Van Der Bellen.

This result however does not take into account the postal vote.

According to official data, about 14% of the electorate opted for the post (885,437 voters), whose results will only be known this Monday.

"Nobody wanted a result like this. We wanted to sleep well rested tonight but now we have to wait until tomorrow. I'm a politician for a long time but I've never been a night like this. All I can say is that those who leave winner will have to join to Austria again, "said Norbert Hofer in an interview with public television channel.

Speaking on the same program, the candidate Alexander Van Der Bellen added that "in the last two weeks there was a huge movement among the electorate, musicians, actors, people from all walks of life, generations and various social classes. This was very useful and I'm very grateful for that. "

If you confirm the victory of liberty party candidate, Norbert Hofer, this is the first time a far-right candidate takes up the Presidency of a E uropean country after the end of World War II.

In Austria, the holder of the Office of the President has the power to dissolve Parliament and appoint the Prime Minister.
