Italy: 18 years in prison for the murder of 700 migrants in the Mediterranean

Judged since January, by a court in Catania, in Sicily, the Tunisian Mohammed Ali Malek and the Syrian Mahmoud Bikhit, are charged with manslaughter, shipwreck and assisting illegal immigration.

The defense attorney of Malek, Massimo Ferrante, now present their arguments in October, when claims that the Tunisian wouldn't spend another migrant.

The alleged captain and first mate of the ship with 700 migrants on Board would have caused the collision of the boat with a Portuguese ship that responded to the alert in the high seas.

The Italian maritime authorities were able to evacuate about of 170 bodies of migrants.

Most of the victims is still trapped in the vessel, the 370 meters deep.

Operations to retrieve the boat should be resumed in the next few days, when the Italy ensured that will bury all the victims.
