At least 73 people were killed Sunday in a violent collision between 2 buses crowded with 125 passengers on board and a tanker, on the road that connects the Afghan capital, Kabul, to the city of Kandahar, in the East of the country.

The head-on collision between heavy vehicles has led to a major fire. Most of the victims died charred during the accident, included several children.

The Afghan Government reported that dozens of passengers were taken, in a State of shock, to different hospitals, located in the cities of Kandahar and Ghazni. The number of dead could, according to the Government, likely to increase in the next few hours this Sunday.

The region where the violent accident is o ne of the most severely punished by the violence of the jihadists of the Taliban movement. Many of the drivers who operate regional public transportation services drive recklessly and often at high speed, usually to avoid any contact with the local militants.

One of the passengers who escaped with their lives the crash told AFP that it was the driver of the bus in which followed.

"Driving like a maniac and it's his fault," said Esmatullah.

"Most drivers take drugs such as hashish, ópium. Everybody knows that. They're always out of control, "concluded the passenger.

It is estimated that about 3 1000 people die every year on the roads of Afghanistan. The fatal accidents happen daily on the main routes of necessary communication in the country, often in high State of degradation.

In May 2005, 18 people died when a minibus captured on a road in the province of Badghis province (Northwest).

In April 2013, at least 45 people died when a bus crashed into a tanker, in the southern province of Kandahar.

The World Bank has funded in more than 240 1000 euros a series of works to improve the road network of Afghanistan, punished by years of local conflicts, economic instability and the resulting lack of investment.
