Birthday of pro-Nazi militia generates controversy in Slovenia

The celebration of the seventieth anniversary of the pro-Nazi Domobranci militia triggered the controversy in Slovenia. The National Guard has supported Hitler's troops in the fight against communist guerrillas in World War II. The controversial element of this celebration was the participation of conservative former Prime Minister, Janez Jansa, at the ceremony on Sunday.

In his speech, the opposition leader said that "resistance to any kind of historical evil of the last century, in Europe and in Slovenia, was and is legitimate. That's why they must respect who struggled with sincerity against fascism, national socialism and communism. All those who died in the name of this resistance deserves a grave. " Janez Jansa recalled that the National Guard has been destroyed by the Communists and that its elements have not had a proper burial.

The President of the Social Democrats, Igor Luksic, accused then former Prime Minister and the right of the Slovenian anti-communism to pró-fascismo.
