Kenya: Army Launches "final assault" to end kidnapping in a shopping mall in Nairobi

The Kenyan army, supported by Israeli military and American FBI agents released tonight, a new operation to put an end to the kidnapping of more than a dozen people, a Nairobi shopping centre.

This is the second round of the military, since Saturday, when an Islamist group occupied the installation, firing shots and throwing grenades against dozens of customers at the Mall "Westgate".

The number of victims rises to 68 dead, after the discovery of nine more bodies, victimized by an armed group composed of about 15 fighters.

Somalia's Shebab movement, close to Al-Qaeda, claimed the attack as a reprisal against the participation of Kenyan army in the fighting against the Islamist group in somali territory.

Among the victims are several foreign nationals, including 4 Americans, two Frenchmen, three Britons and a Dutchman.

More than a thousand people have been rescued since the building since Saturday's attack. Kenyan authorities say they want to end the abduction until Monday, when the armed group continues to withhold about 10 hostages.

It is the deadliest bombing in the country since the suicide bomber action against the American Embassy in Nairobi in 1998. An attack claimed by Al-Qaida and that caused more than 200 deaths.

For several years that the Mall "Westgate", frequented mostly by foreigners who live in Nairobi, had been classified for several security companies, as a possible target of an Islamist attack.
