Assad: the "imaginary enemy" of the United States and France

The Syrian regime accuses the United States and France are trying to combat "an imaginary enemy", stating "not concerned" with a UN resolution which provides for the possibility of an attack against the country.

Statements were made by Bashar Al-Assad, in an interview with Chinese public channel CCTV, in which States that the main obstacle to the disarmament of its chemical arsenal, continues to be the activity of groups "terrorists" in the country.

"I don't see any problem for which we can fulfill the agreed, but as I said these terrorists who obey orders from some countries could prevent UN inspectors to do their job and then they charge to Syria," said Assad.

The declarations coincide with Moscow's offer to send troops to protect the inspectors on the ground. The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, accused the Western countries of trying to use the deal to the dismantling of chemical weapons as a pretext to adopt a UN resolution which provides for the use of force against the Syrian regime.

If Damascus has agreed to dismantle its chemical arsenal after last August's attack on the capital, Assad stressed the "need" to enhance its armament, to cope with what he calls "repeated attacks of Israel".

In parallel to Western efforts to try to convince Russia and China to support a new u.n. resolution, Syria's opposition shows up ready to resume negotiations in Geneva on a political transition in the country, according to diplomatic sources.
