Norway: large oil deposits Discovery in the Barents Sea

The Norwegian Government announced the discovery of an important oil and gas field in the Barents Sea. It is estimated that the potential can reach 160 million barrels of crude oil and more than a billion cubic metres of gas. The discovery near the island of Bjornoya is good news for the Executive. How do you explain the Norwegian Energy Minister, Ola Borten Moe, "it's a great satisfaction to find oil in a latitude so far North."

The polar region aroused great interest and this is a big step in the race to hydrocarbons in the area. However, ecologists warn of the danger that constitutes the oil exploration in the area. The Bellona Foundation President, Frederic Hauge, considers "unacceptable" extract oil around the bounds of the polar icecap and Bjornoya Island, a sea bird reserve. But the ecological issues should not halt the rush to Arctic hydrocarbons. Oil production in Norway peaked in the year 2000, at which point expressed about three million barrels per day. Current production is about half.
