Italy: Berlusconi Party Divisions can save Government

The key to the Italian Government is in the hands of Berlusconi's Party. The divisions within the people of freedom (PDL) give some hopes to the Prime Minister Enrico Letta.

Parliament votes this Wednesday a motion of no confidence to the Government but there are 24 votes in the Senate to ensure the continuity of the Executive. The "irrevocable" resignation of five Ministers of the PDL brought up the interest rates on 10-year bonds, sparked the stock market in Milan and exasperate the Italians.

Despite the Prime Minister's Office have received letters of resignation of the Ministers of the PDL, claimed by Berlusconi on Saturday, there are many voices that oppose. Notably the Deputy Prime Minister Angelino Alfano, regarded as the Dauphin of Silvio Berlusconi.
