NATO and Russia develop explosives detection system

Scientists are conducting a test on a metro station in a European capital: the crowd of passengers is being controlled, but nobody realizes.

This system, dubbed the STANDEX, is being developed by the NATO countries and Russia since 2010.

A technology that, if it was already operational, could have prevented the terrorist attacks on the London transport network, Madrid and Moscow. Pierre Charrue, STANDEX Project Director, explains that "at that time, the security systems of public transport networks were much less effective than in air transport. That's why NATO in partnership with Russia, decided to develop technologies to protect this type of infrastructure ". This project, in the first phase cost 4.8 million euros.

Mikhail Korolev, a Russian system engineers, argues that "this was a good example of international cooperation, since the terrorist threat does not affect just one location, a particular country or region, it is a global problem".

This new system identifies both the suspect and the position of the suspect material in the body and can also be used in large spaces such as football stadiums. The next step will be to transfer these technologies for industry and bring it to market.
