Bulgaria starts to erect controversial fence on border with Turkey

The barrier is being built in the mountainous region of Elhovo where, according to the authorities, takes place 85 percent of illegal entries into the country.

The Defence Minister, Angel Naidenov, says that "today, with the police presence strengthened and army units on the ground, the number of illegals entering the Bulgarian territory decreases significantly".

Since the beginning of the year, approximately 10 000 people entered clandestinely in Bulgaria from Turkey. Two-thirds are refugees from Syria, prompting Sofia to seek the assistance of the European Union and the International Red Cross.
