Chile: President will combine in the female

The Socialist Michelle Bachelet and conservative Evelyn Matthei will contest the second round of the Chilean presidential within a month, on 15 December.

Bachelet reached almost twice the votes of the opponent, but failed to be elected in the first round for a new mandate in the La Moneda Palace, having already directed the country between 2006 and 2010.

The 62-year-old doctor, first woman elected to the Presidency of a South American country, was pleased with the outcome "given the large number of candidates and the challenge of the vote volunteer". Bachelet said that the triumph was "close" and promised to work "for a big win in December".

Among nine candidates, Bachelet won nearly 47 percent of the votes against about 25% for Evelyn Matthei. The conservative considered that "the second turns are good for Chile because they appeal to moderation and the speeches more focused" in the country.

Bachelet part as a favorite for a presidential run-off in which education and inequalities have dominated the debates and where voting is not compulsory for the first time. Maybe that's why, more than half of Chileans has not been to the polls this Sunday.
