Democrats gain ' Big Apple '

For 20 years the Democrats not reigned in New York. The overwhelming victory of Italian-American Bill of Blasio was only overshadowed by weak participation. Just less than a quarter of the electorate voted.

De Blasio won with over 73 percent of the votes and the ' Big Apple ' turn a page of history after two decades of conservative governance, first with the law and order of Rudolph Giuliani and then with the billionaire Michael Bloomberg.

More than the changes that can be expected in the future, supporters of de Blasio celebrate for ever the fact that "a Democrat be back Gracie Mansion". As for expectations, the Democratic electorate expects an "emphasis on fairness" and that the concerns focus not only on expanding the business in the city but who is also given attention to the quality of life for all ".

In other elections Tuesday, Republican Chris Christie was easily re-elected to a second term as Governor of New Jersey, with more than 60% of the vote. In Virginia, Democrat Terry McAuliffe defeated Republican backed by the Tea Party movement, in a race for Governor in which the front-runners were separated by about 1%.
