South Sudan: United Nations admit surprise with outbreak of conflict

"We knew of the existence of tensions and the possibility of problems, but I believe that even the southern Sudanese nor us observers, inside and outside the country, we expected a destabilization so sudden," said Hilde Johnson, of the United Nations.

On behalf of an understanding, the President of Kenya and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia met yesterday with the head of State sul-sudanês, Salva Kiir.

The Sudanese head of State, the Dinka tribe, the majority in the country, is involved in a power struggle with an old rival, the former Vice President Riek Machar, of ethnic Nuer, now leader of the rebels.
