Riga launches the European Capital of culture festivities

The capital of Latvia has provided for over 200 events aiming to promote Latvian art and culture and the authorities expect to receive by more than two million visitors throughout the year.

Riga 2014 sharing the title of European Capital of culture with the Swedish city of Umea.

This Saturday's festivities culminate with a fireworks over the Latvian capital, but hours before more than 15 thousand inhabitants defied the cold to create a human chain of two kilometres to transfer, from hand to hand, the books from the old to the new national library building, inaugurated on the occasion of the European Capital of culture.
