Facebook buys WhatsApp for 11.6 billion euros

Mark Zuckerberg's company agreed to purchase upon payment in cash of 4 billion dollars (2.9 billion euros) more than 12 billion euros (8.7 billion euros) in shares of own social network.

The deal may also add 3 more billion dollars (2.2 billion euros) in restricted stock, that Facebook should offer to creators of WhatsApp, including Jan Koum, which must spend to sit on the Board of the company that manages the social network.

The newspaper "The New York Times describes this operation as the largest acquisition ever made by Facebook, which recently acquired photography application Instagram for one billion dollars (720 million euros). Mark Zuckerberg, in turn, justifies the bet on WhatsApp because the application "is on the way to call a billion people," which represents for the entrepreneur an active technology "extremely valuable."

The deal, however, does not seem to be still closed. The New York newspaper said that if the deal does not come true, Facebook will have to compensate the owners of WhatsApp in about one billion dollars (720 million euros)
