The Greek island of Cephallonia suffers earthquake and aftershocks since late January

Giorgos Malioris, owner of a bakery, claims that are all in a State of shock. "I felt the earth move just now?" Question to the reporter.

The Greece is one of the European countries most affected by earthquakes. In 1953, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 on the Richter scale, killed 450 people in Cephallonia and destroyed a large part of the island.

These recent earthquakes not casualties but destroyed hundreds of houses, public buildings and roads. Approximately 1400 houses were declared temporarily uninhabitable.

Christos Kiriakatos complains:

"In the first earthquake, my house was tilted 3 degrees to the left. The main floor was destroyed. The second earthquake highlighted the inclination to 45°, as you can see, luckily I wasn't inside, but he was dead ".

The island of Kefalonia has about 35 000 inhabitants. After the earthquakes, hundreds of families were left homeless. In this campsite organized by the army, a young mother is concerned for the future. Lives here with her daughter seven months.

Mema Synodinou:

"I don't know if I can still dream. What worries me most is my daughter. "

Right after the disaster, there was a campaign of solidarity to help the most needy.

The corresponding Michalis Arampatzoglou said: "the Museum of Lixouri in the second city of the island has been transformed into Center of distribution of food and water. The State, the Church, private enterprise and anonymous, sent tons of food that volunteers distribute. "

Kefalonia is one of the most famous tourist destinations. The people promise to have everything repaired for next summer. Last year, about 200 thousand tourists visited the island. There were no cancellations this year. In spite of earthquakes, the infrastructures were not affected, because the buildings are made with more reinforcement because of tectonic movements.
