PPE advances with Juncker for President of the European Commission

Jean-Claude Juncker is the European people's Party's candidate to succeed the Portuguese José Manuel Durão Barroso President of the European Commission.

A week after the European Socialists have chosen Martin Schulz as leading candidate and in Congress in Dublin in Ireland, the delegates of the party of the family of the Portuguese PSD and PP, elected the former Prime Minister of Luxembourg and head of the list for the European elections scheduled for the end of May. Juncker received support from Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Juncker's rival was Frenchman Michel Barnier, European Commissioner for the internal market.
