Pritzker Prize-winning humanitarian architecture

His works have a provisional character, created to give humanitarian assistance quickly in scenarios of war or natural disasters, without ambition for a final deployment and using recycled materials.

The jury stressed the "creativity and design of high quality" of the work of Shigeru Ban, and recalled that "When the tragedy falls, he is often there from the beginning." It was highlighted that "their buildings provide shelter, community centers and spiritual places to those who suffered tremendous losses and destruction".

Born in Tokyo in 1957, Shigeru Ban is the third Japanese architect to win the Pritzker in the last five years.
