Syria: Conflict continues without diplomatic or military solution in sight

During one of the rare public appearances, Bashar al-Assad, declared himself determined to pursue the war against the rebels.

The Syrian President visited the IDP camp of al-Doueir, in Damascus, nearly three years after the beginning of the conflict that still has no diplomatic or military solution in sight.

The international community is worried about the possible candidacy of al-Assad to a third presidential term.

"There are many signs that point to a re-election. I suspect that if this happens, all opposition won't be eventually interested to talk with the Government, "said Lakhdar Brahimi, the UN mediator for the Syrian conflict.

Since the beginning of the conflict, initiated the March 15, 2011 for a peaceful plea that, in the face of repression, turned into a civil war, the Assad regime known as "terrorists" the rebels seeking to overthrow.

According to UN data, close to 2.5 million Syrians, including 1.2 million children, fled from Syria to take refuge in neighbouring countries, while 6.5 million are displaced internally. This is the largest population of displaced persons in the world. The death toll is estimated at more than 140,000.
