Ukraine: Merkel and Putin opens door for diplomatic solution

Angela Merkel and Vladimir Putin arrived Sunday to a principle of agreement to resolve the social, political and conflict, now too, which has been worse in Ukraine. The German Chancellor and the President of Russia talked personally by telephone and the Kremlin leader was recetivo the creation of a "contact group" in Ukraine, which is likely to be led by the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe, with the aim of finding a solution to restore peace and stability in the country.

In the telephone conversation, Merkel has accused the Russia of violating international laws by moving troops to Ukrainian territory, in particular for the autonomous region of Crimea, and have somewhat interfered illegitimately in the sovereignty of another country.

Putin has, nevertheless, explained to the German Chancellor that the Russian military presence in the Crimea would be appropriate due to the existence of an alleged threat of groups "ultra-nationalists" to the security of the region and of the Kremlin's interests in existing autonomous peninsula where the majority of inhabitants is expressed in Russian.

In Brussels, on the sidelines of an emergency meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Sunday to discuss the military and political instability in Ukraine, the Secretary General Anders Rasmussen appealed to Russia to reduce pressure on the Ukraine, honoring all international commitments, withdraw its forces to their military bases and to suppress any other interference in any other zone of Ukraine. "

The United States also are attentive. On Saturday Barack Obama spoke for more than an hour on the phone with Putin and Tuesday John Kerry travels to Kiev to express its support for the interim authorities of Ukraine.

For their part, the leaders of the G7 countries have condemned a "clear violation" of the sovereignty of Ukraine by Moscow and announced the suspension of preparations for the G8 Summit, scheduled for Sochi in June.

This Sunday, in an interview with ABC television station, the US Secretary of State has left some sort of warning: "it is true that Russia can invade the Crimea, but in the end will end up alone and it would have cost to the economy. Would harm the Russian business and citizens themselves. Finally, Russia would isolate herself in a comprehensive way and this when just investing 60 billion dollars with the Olympic Games to promote a new image of the country. "
