Chile: 11 dead in fire in Valparaiso

The flames destroyed 700 hectares of forest and spread through the residential hills de La Cruz and Las Canas, destroying 500 homes and forced to relocate about 10,000 people.

The Chilean President, Michelle Bachelet, decreed the State of emergency, allowing the mobilization of military personnel for assistance and evacuation operations.

A resident explains that the fire was quite close to their home and so we only had time to "take the children, pets and some clothes" before being displaced by the authorities to a nearby school.

According to the Mayor of Valparaiso, is the worst fire in the history of the city of 900,000 inhabitants, although the flames have not reached the port, nor the historic neighborhood, inscribed as a Unesco World Heritage site.
