Ukraine: Separatists slaughter helicopter and kill several soldiers in Sloviansk

The separatists on Thursday shot down a helicopter of the Ukrainian army, on the outskirts of Sloviansk. More than a dozen soldiers and a general have lost their lives.

According to the Ukrainian Ministry of the Interior, the unit was carrying ammunition and food to the combat zone.

This is deadliest day for Ukrainian forces since the insurgency began in the East of the country, following three days of heavy fighting in Donetsk, in which several dozen separatists were killed.

The self-proclaimed Mayor of Sloviansk, Viacheslav Ponomariov, confirmed today that the four members of the Organisation for security and cooperation in Europe (OSCE), missing for two days, are in the hands of militias and will be released soon.

People start running away from some areas of the region of Sloviansk. Already Thursday several civilians were injured in residential areas affected by obuzes and mortar shots.

The conflict exacerbates the President-elect, Petro Poroshenko, is expected to meet June 3 in Warsaw with Barack Obama and may meet with Putin in the ceremonies commemorating the anniversary of d-day, the June 6, in France.
