Died Eduard Shevardnadze

The former President of Georgia, Eduard Shevardnadze, a key figure in the Soviet Union's democratic opening process, died today at the age of 86 years.

He was one of the architects of the end of the cold war with the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, died in late morning after a long period of illness.

Eduard Shevardnadze was elected President in 1995, having resigned in 2003, during the "rose revolution", backwards left a country impoverished and plunged into chaos.
