Avian influenza in the Netherlands

The outbreak was detected on a poultry farm in Henkendorp, about 60 miles south of Amsterdam, where the chickens were exterminated.

According to the authorities, this is highly contagious strain H5N8, which had already been detected in Germany two weeks ago.

Despite the variant have never been found in humans, the Dutch Government confirmed that the variant is deadly for birds and can infect humans.

A ban on transport of poultry and derivatives, such as eggs, will be in effect for 72 hours.
