Pope canonizes first Saint of Sri Lanka

Pope Francis was received by a crowd on the second day of visit to Sri Lanka.

Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in the coastal area of the capital, Colombo, to attend the mass of canonization of the first Saint of the island, goês missionary Joseph Vaz, high point of the Pontiff's trip to the Buddhist-majority country, where the Catholic community represents only 7 percent of the population.

The relocation of the leader of the Catholic Church to Sri Lanka happens a few days after taking the new President functions, Maithripala Sirisena, who promised during the campaign to end the repression of religious minorities in a country still marked by the remains of more than two and a half decades of civil war.
