Thousands of ultra-nationalists parade in Kiev

Controversial character in Ukraine, Bandera is seen by some as a national hero and symbol of the struggle for independence from the former Soviet Republic, while others accuse him of having collaborated with the nazis during World War II.

The parade was organized by two Ukrainian right-wing formations. Valentina Barchiuk, an economist and member of the Svoboda party, argues that Bandera "already said that Russia was the enemy and today we see that is exactly like that, because it attacked the independent Ukraine and proved that his words were true."

The March takes place this year in a context of crisis in the East of the country, where there are several months pró-russos separatist groups fighting the Ukrainian Army after having two self-proclaimed independent republics in the regions of Donetsk and Lugansk.
