Malaysia: jail time for opposition leader for sodomy

The decision of the Federal Court confirmed the sentence of the Court of appeal that had sentenced to one quarter of the maximum penalty of twenty years, under the Malaysian law for the crime of sodomy.

Anwar Ibrahim is considered to be the target of a political process. The conviction makes his plans to run for the elections to 2017.

The trial was accompanied by hundreds of supporters.

The decision has the potential to trigger protests, since the opposition showed strength in elections in 2013.

Former Deputy Prime Minister, proprietor of the Finance folder in the years 90, Anwar Ibrahim, had already been convicted of the same crime and abuse of power in 1998, when he was stripped of his duties and sentenced to 6 in prison.
