Nigeria: Army claims to have defeated Boko Haram in the town of Berry

The military's announcement comes more than a month after the Islamist fighters have occupied the location, on the shores of Lake Chad, causing hundreds of dead civilians, in one of the largest massacres of the conflict.

According to the army several combatants were killed during the operation to resume, Berry started on Friday.

In parallel, the Group pursues the sporadic attacks on territory of Chad and Niger, on the border area next to Lake Chad, when the two national armies tries to prevent the progression of the combatants.

In Cameroon, the authorities are still grappling with thousands of refugees, as in this field in Minawao.

"This field is ready to welcome 18 thousand people, but at the moment has more than 32 thousand refugees and begin to lack the means to deal with the situation".

The conflict that has lasted since 2009 has caused more than a million and a half refugees, over 13 thousand dead.

The military leaders of Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger meet next week in N'Djamena to seal the creation of a force of over 8 thousand men to fight the Boko Haram.

The Group had declared an "Islamic caliphate" in the northeast of the country last year.
