Costa Rica: high alert due to volcanic eruptions

The Turrilba volcano, situated at 3,340 m above sea level, about 80 km from the capital, St Joseph, erupted on Thursday morning.

Since then, a column of ash about a thousand feet tall darkened the center of the country.

The capital's international airport resumed operations Saturday after a cautionary closure that affected some 7,000 passengers.

Last October the Turrialba volcano had given the first signs of activity after the years 90, when interrupted a long silence of 130 years.
