FYR Macedonia: police and alleged terrorist armed group involved in clashes

At least five members of the security forces died as a result of an operation against armed men in an area of the city of Kumanovo, whose population is overwhelmingly of Albanian origin.

The town is located 40 kilometres north of the capital, Escópia.

Local residents were evacuated while police carried out the operation.

A spokesman for the Ministry of the interior States that it is an armed terrorist group whose purpose would be to attack government buildings.

It is estimated that around 30% of the country's population is of Albanian origin.

Some local residents claim that it is an initiative of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski that intends to divert attention in order to cover his other crimes.

The incident occurs four days after demonstrations organized by the opposition in the capital, Escópia, against police violence and abuse of power.
